One of the personal numbers that you want to maintain while living in Illinois is your credit score. This is something that can quickly drop with a few mistakes and that can take some time to raise. Fortunately, there are a few things that you can do without getting a credit card.

Authorized user

If you know someone who has a credit account, consider asking them if you can be added as an authorized user. This is a good option if you have had credit issues in the past or if you’re young and just getting started with building your credit profile. Keep in mind that you need to be responsible when using the other person’s account as they will have to pay back the debt unless you make arrangements to pay what you spend.

Loans

Think about taking out a small loan with your bank or a finance company. It doesn’t have to be a large amount in order to help you get started with raising your credit score. You could use the money for groceries, a monthly payment, or for an emergency. Try to pay back the loan as quickly as possible and by paying more than the minimum payment each month.

Monthly bills

There are ways that you can report the monthly payments that you pay so that they are reflected on your credit report. These include your rent, car payment, and utility bills. Consider talking to your landlord or the utility companies that you work with to see if they will report on-time payments for you.

When you want to increase your credit score, there’s no need to start applying for credit cards. Simply make payments on time while showing that you’re responsible with the money that you obtain from other sources.
